Edward Bond, The Killing

This poem was published in Chris Searle’s collection, One for Blair: An Anthology of Poems for Young People

Twice before the blows that killed him he was beaten
By fascists in the war against reason
After these attacks those sworn to destroy the law
Left him wounded in the street
After the third attack those sworn to defend the law
Left him in the street to die

Many are killed in backrooms in quiet streets
Where no-one can see his killing
And come forward to name the killer to the police
He was killed bu police in front of police
Yet no-one came forward to say what they had seen
And name the killer

So we wonder what use are police sworn to defend the law
And how shall we defend ourselves against the defenders of
law who kill a man on the street?
